Speech
Therapy at Charlotte Speaks will
involve three phases :
Evaluation |
Therapy |
Family Education
Evaluations
Speech and language evaluations
are individualized assessments
tailored for each child,
depending on the child's age,
parental concerns, physician
concerns, and other information
obtained in an initial
interview. This evaluation will
help determine your child's
current level of speech and / or
language performance and will
assist in determining if there
is an actual delay and how to
move forward in addressing the
child's needs.
Therapy
Speech therapy sessions are
provided in an in-office
environment or, if appropriate,
in the child's home. Therapy
generally involves a 30 or 60
minute session, created with
your child's specific needs, age
and interests in mind. At the
end of each session, parents are
given an update on the session
as well as "homework suggestions
or activities" intended to
reinforce and support therapy
goals at home.
Consistent attendance and
diligent 'homework' is crucial
to the success of speech
therapy.
In addition to clinic based or
in-home sessions, speech therapy
can often be enhanced by
involving other service
providers such as Occupational
Therapists or Physical
Therapists, depending upon the
needs of the child.
Charlotte Speaks takes a team
approach to bringing about the
best possible outcomes for each
child. All therapy plans
will be discussed thoroughly
with the parents and interested
physicians and / or teachers.
Family
Education
At Charlotte Speaks, we view the
family as 'the client' and
involve parents and family
members in the child's therapy.
Through customized family
education, we want to enable
parents to become their child's
'primary language facilitator,'
thereby maximizing the
opportunities for communication
development in everyday
situations.
While participation in the
family education is not
mandatory, it is highly
encouraged. We
consistently find that families
who are engaged in the child's
therapy realize the greatest
outcomes for their children.
